Guest post: Some tips for keeping Anxiety in check at Christmas!

“Tis the season to be jolly…”

Well…yes…and no!

I actually find Christmas one of the most stressful and anxiety spiking moments of the year.

The combination of expectations, time demands, financial outgoings and trying to keep everyone happy can be massively exhausting!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the actual event – when everything is organised – and I can just sit back, relax and enjoy some time with the family – plus it’s my birthday on Boxing Day, so those couple of days are great!

But we all get caught up in a massive Rat Race – which seems to start earlier and earlier every year – which can send you into a spin, if you are not careful!

So, I’ve listed below a few tips which may well just save your sanity in the festive period.

Get organised!

Make a list of everything you need to buy, who for, who to send cards to, check out those Christmas shopping times, prepare for what food & drink you need – then get to work on doing those things – do not procrastinate!

RESPECT…

No, I am not bursting in to song – well, maybe on my birthday – but show respect to your family and friends at Christmas.  Be fair and compromise on things like when and where you will be meeting up – try not to let more dominant characters dictate it to everyone else.

On the flip side – if you feel that people are trying to make you fit in to their plans and what is good for them – be honest, fair and reasonable and try to reach a compromise.  Remember, you cannot please everyone!

Think ahead.

After Christmas Day & Boxing Day – you may have a lot of free time.  Use this to plan ahead for 2017 – to review where you are and check it against where you want to be.

Do you want to develop new skills, a new mind-set – what areas of your life causes you pain or anxiety?  They are the things to address first.

And most importantly…. when the hard work is done, you’ve thought ahead and created your blueprint for an awesome 2017…RELAX!

Put your feet up, grab the sherry/snowball/brandy (or all 3!) – nibble on a mince pie – and rest up – you’ve earned it.

Have a very Merry Christmas & a Happy & Prosperous New Year!
