Guest blog: Get organised, by Nick Elston

Greetings!

Good day ladies & gentlemen.

Welcome to another Guest Blog post, by myself, for the awesome people of Winbox.

For avid readers (or listeners, did you know you can get this as audio, too?) – of these posts – last month I introduced a different theme to my usual Sales blogs.

If you didn’t – you can catch up here: http://www.winbox.co/blog-articles/2016/10/18/guest-post-never-assume-anything

In a nutshell, I explained that I have lived with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) & Anxiety in general for most of my life.

I now love to speak about, blog and share my experiences with audiences – talking about my successes, mistakes, learnings and advice that I have gathered along the way, in my pursuit of achieving a less anxious life – and how I used Public Speaking and Openness to completely stop my OCD tendencies.

The reason I have true passion in speaking and writing about this and now, on the back of my successes in heightening awareness of Mental Health, helping people one to one with my experiences and tips – is that it’s still considered ‘taboo’.

So, myself and Marc Woodland, got together, looked at the response from last month’s post – looked at the value I could add ongoing by sharing my tips and experiences – and decided to go for it!

So, my monthly Guest Blog will now be focussed on helping you work smarter, live better, raise your awareness, increase your happiness and improve your mental wellbeing.

After all, Anxiety is something that we all suffer from – at one stage or another – and at different levels.

So, in true Winbox style, let’s shatter the norms and kick off with some pro-active, laser focussed advice on how to smash your anxiety and kick on to achieve everything that you wish for – that sound good?

Yes?

Fantastic!

Let’s start with this one – so, so important generally – but especially in business…

GET ORGANISED!

I’m not sure about you, but procrastination is something that still tries to out-do me every day!

I really work hard on this one – because we all have things on our ‘to do’ list which are far easier to ‘delay for 24 hrs’ than actually do!

Usually it’s something that is going to be awkward, boring, expensive or just inconvenient!

BUT – what happens, in your mind, when you keep delaying things that you say you will do today?

  • You build up pressure, because you just KNOW you should of done it.
  • You start to feel anxious as you now have to deal with it tomorrow – or even worse – later!
  • You will become critical of yourself, the feeling of letting yourself down.
  • You start to see it from the other side – maybe feel guilty about letting down the other party.

The problem is, the more that you procrastinate and put off – the more pressure you will feel.  You are subconsciously building up a tidal wave of anxiety in your head – which WILL get to bursting point!

If you take in to account all of the above, just from procrastinating – it’s easy to see why so many entrepreneurs and business people suffer from poor Mental Health, breakdowns and the like.

You may even tell yourself “I’m too busy” etc – but are you?  Are you really?  Be honest with yourself – are you busy, or are you feeling lazy, or maybe you just don’t love that task, so you are not wanting to do it?

If it’s not a task you HAVE to do – then why is it on there?  But we will come on to simplification in a later blog post! ☺

The other aspect I wanted to cover is the way you PRO-ACTIVELY do business.

So, assuming you are in a function that deals with clients or customers – and most of us are – how do you make sure that none are forgotten?

I hear you asking now – “What does this have to do with Anxiety, Nick?”  Well even if you didn’t – I’m gonna tell you anyway!

Essentially, we all want to remember people, conversations and key dates – but with the greatest of intentions, this is very difficult to achieve.  Especially in a time where we know more people each, than ever.

The problem comes – especially to those who are people-pleasers (and again, we will get on to that hornets’ nest of a topic in a later blog!) – where we fall down.  We forget birthdays, events, anniversaries – or maybe even to call back that client or prospect, to send that quote – to fulfil the order.

What happens then?  Exactly the same as before!:

  • You build up pressure, because you just KNOW you should of done it.
  • You start to feel anxious as you now have to deal with it tomorrow – or even worse – later!
  • You will become critical of yourself, the feeling of letting yourself down.
  • You start to see it from the other side – maybe feel guilty about letting down the other party.

Plus – you potentially lose relationships/business/credibility/reputation – the list goes on!

So is it any wonder that our minds are looking out for us by making us feel bad about the things that we should be doing?  You just need to give it a helping hand.

Or, for someone with my memory skills – a HUGE helping hand!

So, unless you are one of those smug, but brilliant people who never forgets the birthdays, anniversaries and events of their family and friends – you are going to need a bigger boat (I just wanted to shoehorn that line in to a blog post, sorry!) and tool yourself up correctly.

You are going to need a Customer Relationship Management tool (CRM) – there are lots to choose from and all offer something slightly different from the rest, your needs will be dictated by your business and how you work, what product/service you have and your budget.

I or Marc would be happy to recommend some platforms that we know.

Then you will have complete peace of mind that you are not solely reliant on your memory, but you have assurance that no-one or nothing will fall between the cracks.

That is unless you click ‘postpone for 24 hrs’…

You have been warned!

So go out and get s…tuff done – your business, personal life and mind will be so much better for it!

‘Til next time, have a fantastic month ahead…

Nick
